Saint Simons Island, Golden Isles of Georgia
Very country club vibe that can feel a bit old fashioned
The Lodge at Sea Island feels less like Georgia and more like Scotland, where golf, shooting, scotch, and nuanced are king. The grounds include:
A spectacular golf course.
- Beautiful wooden paths through the marshes.
- The spooky ruins of an old cotton plantation.
At sunset, a bagpiper plays outdoors for an hour as guests enjoy pre-dinner drinks on the patio. After dark, campfires come to life, and guests are invited to make s’mores while the stars are out.
The lobby is majestic, made entirely of wood with antique tables, oriental rugs, lots of tasteful upholstered furniture, and huge arched windows with beautiful views. Colt & Alison, South Lodge steakhouse, serves breakfast and dinner overlooking the 18th hole golf course. Decor includes a wood-burning fireplace, heavily carved chandeliers, and historic golf objects and photographs on the walls. The Oak Room, specializing in shrimp and grains and other southern favorites, has a beautiful dining room, with lots of oil paintings on the walls, parquet floors, and a wide Scotch variety. The men’s locker room is the ultimate caveman: Lunch and drinks are served in the middle of the lockers, and there is a cigar room with sea views and flat-screen TVs for watching sports. Sorry, ladies – there is nothing comparable in the women’s locker room. Most of the guests here are older golfers; families and younger couples (who don’t care about golf) should book rooms in the abbey.
The Lodge is on the grounds of an old cotton plantation, now a golf course, with spectacular St. Simons sound views.
The Lodge at Sea Island is located at the end of the historic avenue on St. Simons Island of Oaks, which was once a cotton plantation. The area is isolated, and the Lodge is part of the Sea Island Golf Club, which guarantees spectacular panoramic views of the golf course and St. Simons Island. The St. Simons Airport is a mile and a half from the hotel; Jacksonville and Savannah airports are 80 miles away. The hotel’s companion property, The Cloister, includes a beach club with several outdoor pools; it’s a 10-minute ride via free transportation. Parking is free.
Personal butlers, Molton Brown toiletries, Nespresso coffee machines, and antique furniture
The Lodge at Sea Island’s rooms is palatial, with little touches of luxury – including Molton Brown toiletries, swimsuit drying racks on balconies, Nespresso machines, and window seats – that make a big difference. The decor resembles what you would find in a wealthy English mansion, with antiques, upholstered furniture, oriental rugs, and exposed beams. The marble bathrooms are equally luxurious, with rainfall showerheads, glass shower cubicles, and deep bathtubs with bath trays for books, bubble baths, or drinks. Most rooms have water or fairway views. Even Standard Rooms are enormous, with high-quality extras, such as crystal glasses, elegant ice buckets, and personal butlers. All rooms have free Wi-Fi.
School Shooting, Golf Learning Center, Pilates Studio, Zumba, and more
The Lodge at Sea Island features a spectacular golf course and Golf Learning Center with three of the top 50 Golf Digest teachers on the team. Inside, there is a pro shop and men’s and women’s locker rooms. This property has a small fitness center, but guests can take the bus to the cloister property to use the luxury spa, indoor lap pool, squash courts, a Pilates studio, and group exercise classes, including Zumba barre and spinning. The abbey is also where guests will find the sandy beach with sun loungers and umbrellas, several restaurants, and an outdoor swimming pool complex for children. There is a shooting school stocked with trap and shooting rifles, beds, borrowed bikes, and a decent Downton Abbey clubhouse back at the inn. Guided kayaking, sailing, and stand-up paddleboard trips are offered through the water sports center for a fee. On-site dining includes the Oak Room for Southern favorites and Colt & Alison, a steakhouse. There is an elegant indoor bar with patio seating overlooking the sound.
